Khao San Road is Bangkok's backpacker mecca. The ubiquitous budget accommodation attracts travelers to the Banglamphu area just a short distance from the city's top temples.

Freaks and hippies mingle with gap-year party goers and, these days, families on vacation. Combine this with the locals in the area hoping to capitalize on the influx of foreign cash and you have a fascinating crossroads of culture.

Dodging the innumerable tuk-tuk drivers and the almost predatory suit salesmen may get bothersome at times, but friendly artisans and vendors balance out the equation. Khao San Road can keep social butterflies busy for days, in the space of a couple city blocks.
