The Thai New Year festival in Chiang Mai, Songkran features a number of colourful processions and parades. The largest of them occurs in the afternoon on the first official day of the festival.

Crowds gather to watch passing floats, dancers, drummers, and most importantly for the major procession, Buddha images. The images from various temples around town are mounted on stands and placed on top of trucks that slowly meander through the virtually impenetrable crowds. While passing, the spectators throw as much water as they can on the Buddha to contribute to the bathing and purification of the image.

Every participant in the parade as well as each of the spectators comes away from the event drenched, usually in water scented with herbs and flowers. Soaked, they’re just ready for more water fighting.
