Ancient and modern mix in Ayutthaya where ruined temples tower over a town making its way through the present. The centre of the city sits on an island formed by the convergence of three rivers that provided a natural defense to this former capital in ancient times.

On this island, the city feels small and relaxed when you start to wander amongst the temples. Hop on a bike and tour past giant reclining Buddhas, decaying khmer temples and glittering modern wats. Board a boat and meander on the waterways that will guide you to more treasures. It's a joy to explore something so wonderful that sits only blocks from your hotel.

Built in 1369, the temple was restored in the 15th century and renovated as late as 1941.
All that remains of this statue is a head peering enigmatically from the roots which makes for a beautiful, symbolic image.

Its giant central prang is surrounded by smaller towers and walls and looks out to the nearby river. It was built in 1629.

Open and exposed, low sunset light easily strikes its red bricks and they look wonderfully saturated with warm colour.

This giant statue was once housed under a roof, but that surrounding temple is long gone.
The reclining pose of this statue is meant to represent the exact moment at which Buddha achieved enlightenment.

It was built in 1448, but largely destroyed by the Burmese in the 1700s when they stole the gold from this former palace's giant golden Buddha.

The temple is still quite a sight to behold and remains a great example of the ancient architecture.
