1940s Wartime Weekend

Like the 1940s Weekend in Howarth, the East Lancashire railway hosts a yearly tribute to the 1940s. The wartime weekend spans the towns on the railway including Irwell Vale, Ramsbottom and, the location of these photos, Rawtenstall.

The railway station in Rawtenstall was the focus of the events which included a dramatic re-eneactment of a battle between Axis and Allied forces. Dressed in period military costumes, the normally quiet Rossendale valley briefly became a war zone with machine gun fire and mortar blasts echoing through the hills.
