The classical architecture of the Manchester Central Library tricks visitors into believing the building is much older than it is. Though you may believe you are walking to a building that has seen centuries of history, in fact, this building designed by E. Vincent Harris was only completed in 1934.

It stands at the end of Oxford Road next to the Town Hall Extension and gleams white in when the sun strikes it. The alley between the library and the town hall called Library Walk is a slowly arcing road where both structures tower over pedestrian traffic.

The interior of the library is equally as impressive, especially in the main reading room where the giant domed ceiling reflects and almost seems to amplify the quietest of sounds. Though these cavernous echoes may not be especially conducive to reading, they do contribute to the atmosphere of a building that feels old beyond its years.
