Canals, old, red brick buildings, bridges, geese and history are all guaranteed greet you on your arrival in Castlefield. The area was designated Britain's first Urban Heritage site in the 1990's.

Calm and devoid of streets to be choked with traffic, it has the atmosphere of a park despite having an industrial feel. Canada geese, ducks and swans will happily approach you for any spare bread crumbs you might be carrying while all around is the regenerated legacy of Manchester's past.

Castlefield was the site of the original Roman settlement of Mamucium and is still the centre of Manchester's canal network. A small ruin remains of the original Roman fort and history is visible up to the present day regeneration of the area and its upscale apartments and bars.
