For a weekend in May, the small Yorkshire village of Howarth goes back in time to the 1940s. US soldiers escort evacuees through the streets of the Bronte Country town, women in vintage dresses dance the jitterbug with sailors, antique cars and military jeeps crowd the main street and the wartime ways of the past become the present.

The recreation of the 40s brings a flood of tourists into the village to experience an extraordinary nostalgia. The town already looks like it has skipped ahead a number of decades, but when it is populated by Rosie the Riveter and Winston Churchill, it's easy to forget what year it is.
